Basic Principles to Motivate Employees

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

1. Motivating yourself will Motivate employees
Enthusiasm is contagious. If you enjoy your job, it helps others enjoy theirs too. If you do a good job of taking care of yourself and your own job, you will have much clearer perspective on how others are doing. You are setting an example for employees to follow.

2. Work to align goals of the organization with goals of employees
Frequent reviews and strategic goal setting sessions will help to ensure that company goals and personal goals are in alignment. Managers need to make the goals of the company very clear so an employee can be sure the goals they set will contribute to the success of the company. Employees will buy into the goals of the company when they are allowed to have input.  Goals should meet the SMART rule: Specific, Measureable, Action, Realistic and Time oriented.

3. Understand what motivates each employee
Start by evaluating what motivates you. A key to motivating others is knowing what inspires them. Everyone is not motivated by the same method. Some want recognition, others money, learning, spending time with family and etc. Is their job configured to motivate them properly? What can you do to better motivate yourself and others?

4. Recognize that supporting employee motivation is a process, not a task
People and organizations change all the time so it is important to continually look at what motivates you and the employees and to make sure the processes you have in place are still effective. It is an on-going process.

5. Support employee motivation by using organizational systems (for example, policies and procedures) — don’t just count on good intentions
Use reliable and comprehensive systems in the workplace to help motivate employees. Don’t just count on cultivating strong interpersonal relationships with employees to help motivate them. Use established compensation systems, employee performance systems, and organizational policies and procedures to support employee motivation.

Setting up Tire Estimator

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

If selling tires is your job, then ‘Tire Estimator’ is the tool for you! ‘Tire Estimator’ was developed to allow the user to quickly scroll through data and check package pricing for tires without having to jump in and out of a quote for each price.

In Tire Power’s Front Counter, go to ‘Search Inventory’ and search for a tire. Then on the toolbar click the ‘Tire Estimator’ button and you will see the total “4 and out-the-door” package price for the tires. From inside ‘Tire Estimator’ you can also change the quantity, price class, tax group and included package to alter the price. So at this point you are thinking “ok this is nice”, but wait there is more! This window is designed like a toolbar, so you have the ability to go back to the search window in the background and select another tire without closing the ‘Tire Estimator’ window. This is a big time saver! Just move the ‘Tire Estimator’ window off to the side and continue searching inventory. Each time you select a tire, ‘Tire Estimator’ updates!

‘Tire Estimator’ also has default settings for each store to customize what it displays. To setup  ‘Tire Estimator’, go to Office Manager > File > Store Customization > General > Tire Estimator side-tab. Select the default for the Tax Group, Price Class and Package then click ‘Close’. Now you know, so sell more tires…

Tire Estimator

One of the many powerful tools inside of Tire Power software’s point-of-sale is the “Tire Estimator” tool.  This feature allows you to quickly and easily give a customer who is either on the phone or in front of you a “4 and out the door” price on tires.  From here you can create a quote, work order or invoice in one simple step by using one of the buttons at the bottom left of the window. Depending on what type of business you are (retail vs. wholesale for example) there are different ways you will want to setup the “Tire Estimator” to work for you. There are several options to consider when setting this tool up. For example the default price class, tax group and package which will be used.

For the wholesale tire locations who don’t normally install tires, they can simply use a blank package and a wholesale specific tax group which includes any delivery fees or fuel surcharges, but eliminates the state and local taxes. For the retail tire and automotive service shop, you can have custom packages built for each unique scenario your salespeople may come across. For example, you could have a package with a road hazard plan built in, and one without. This way you could easily tell a customer the “out the door” difference in the two options. “Tire Estimator” is just another one of the tools built into Tire Power with the flexibility to conform to your business rather than forcing you to completely change your business to utilize the tool.
